Matthew, Age 10
In June 2024, Matthew, a joyful and healthy 10-year-old, was diagnosed with High-Risk B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL). This life-altering diagnosis came after a sudden complaint of chest pain while at school. Following an initial visit to the family doctor and extensive testing, including bloodwork, urinalysis, and a bone marrow biopsy, our worst fears were confirmed.
Since beginning treatment, Matthew has faced numerous challenges as a result of intensive chemotherapy. He has endured severe side effects and battled several infections due to critically low blood counts. During the consolidation phase of treatment, his condition worsened, necessitating a month-long hospitalization, including a harrowing stay in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
Despite these trials, Matthew remains resilient. He is bravely working through the many rigorous phases of treatment with one unwavering goal: to ring the end-of-treatment bell and reclaim his normal childhood. He enjoys mind puzzles, video games and challenging DIY projects – along with camping, outdoor parks and going out to eat with his family.
Matthew’s courage and determination inspire us daily, but the journey is far from easy. The highs and lows can change in an instant, making every moment of progress and every smile he shares a true blessing. His strength reminds us of the importance of hope and perseverance, even in the face of overwhelming adversity.
